Our history and what we do...

       

  • Jackson's Greenhouse and Garden Center

  • Who we are and how we have grown!
      
    Jackson's Greenhouse was established at the current location in May, 1951 about 2 months before the devastating 1951 flood which put the entire property 6 feet under water. Dwight and Janice Jackson, then 29, with 2 young boys, David and Fred, purchased the property from Worth Williams who originally established and built the greenhouses in 1922. They resided in a 2 room house with a hand pump for water and an outhouse down the path. They operated a vegetable greenhouse with crops of early spring fresh tomatoes, sold from May to July and lettuce and radishes from October to March. The family grew with Paul born in 1952 and Marijean in 1958.
  • By then, Dwight had constructed a 3 bedroom haydite block home on the site, which now houses the offices of the operation. Through the years, to augment the family income, Dwight also established Jackson Electric and began grain farming as well. There were "you-pick" tomatoes, green beans and beets here as well with sales of watermelon and cantaloupe at the Shorey Dairy just down the street.
  • In 1968 when David graduated from Kansas State University with his degree in Horticulture, the greenhouse had dwindled in importance and only greenhouse tomatoes were produced and delivered to approximately 15 local grocery stores. The Jackson Greenhouse tomatoes were picked and delivered ripe and naturally grown in the Kaw Valley soil in the greenhouses and were known for their unmatched flavor.
  • In 1970 David and Annette were married with the plan for Annette to teach for several years. This all changed in 1971 with the arrival of Chad, on their first anniversary and Traci, 14 months later. With these new arrivals, David became full time employed with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, while Annette took the lead at the greenhouse. Annual bedding plants were added with a commensurate reduction in tomato production each year. In 1976 a small garden center was added to the front of the greenhouse and Annette began floral arranging and we added interior plant maintenance and lawn maintenance to our list of services.
  • Soon we added roses to our crops we grew and trees and shrubs were brought in to add to the selection. Landscaping services soon followed. The warehouse building south of the greenhouse and six additional greenhouses together with a head house for our south range of greenhouses was added throughout the 80's. David returned to full time status at the greenhouse in 1986 after 14 years in housing management.
  • That year we opened 2 temporary seasonal stores, one on N. Topeka Blvd. and another at 29th & Fairlawn. We were the first to do so in the Topeka area, however after several years everyone followed suit, so we discontinued these to focus on growing our business here.
  • As Dave and Annette complete their 42nd and 40th years in this business, they look forward to continuing a great tradition in the garden business in Topeka.
